College Search

  • College Board Big Future: College search function.
  • College Navigator: Contains a database of thousands of schools and allows search by location, program, and degree offerings.
  • Naviance: Info specific to your student, college search functions, and, once your student has taken a PSAT, SAT, or ACT, college-specific scattergrams of WHS applicants.
  • College Data: Statistics by college.
  • The College Finder, by Steven R. Antonoff. Lists colleges by majors, lifestyles, religious affiliation, Greek life, etc.
  • Fiske Guide to Colleges
  • Princeton Review’s Guide to the Best 382 Colleges
  • The Insider’s Guide to Colleges
  • Colleges that Change Lives, by Loren Pope
  • Where You Go is Not Who You’ll Be, by Frank Bruni
  • U.S. News and Niche: College rankings sites with more detailed information and statistics.
  • The Common Data Set (just Google it with the college’s name): Lists detailed info about admissions, financial aid, merit aid, enrollment, graduation rates, etc.

Standardized Testing

  • Fair Test: For colleges that are test-optional
  • College Board: SAT, AP, and SAT Subject Tests
  • ACT: ACT Tests

Teen Life: A searchable database of summer programs.

Paying for College

  • The College Solution: Lynn O’Shaughnessy, financial journalist, gives strategies for finding colleges that offer good financial and/or merit aid.
  • Scholarships 360: Colleges that give good merit aid.
  • Net Price Calculator: Google a college’s name with “net price calculator” to find that school’s NPC for a rough estimate of what your family will pay for your child to attend. Some NPCs are much better than others, so take them with a grain of salt.
  • MyInTuition: College cost estimator for multiple, but not all, colleges.
  • Federal Student Aid: Official website.
  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): FAFSA financial aid form required for all colleges (required by some for merit aid consideration). On the lower right click on the FAFSA4Caster to get a rough estimate of your Expected Family Contribution (EFC).
  • College Board – CSS Profile: Financial aid form required by many private and some public colleges.

Artists

  • National Portfolio Day Association: Accredited arts colleges and university art departments that are members of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. They host portfolio review fairs in cities across the country once a year in October or November.

  • Odds of a high school athlete playing in college, by division.
  • Odds of a high school athlete going pro
